The geographical area of Kishoreganj is about 2,689 square kilometres. The Netrokona and Mymensingh districts bound it on the northwest, the Narsingdi and Brahmanbaria districts on the south, the Sunamganj and Habiganj districts on the east, and the Mymensingh and Gazipur districts on the west. The transportation and communication system of Kishoreganj is fairly advanced. Kishoreganj is 135 kilometers away from the capital, Dhaka. It can be traveled by road or railway. Although this haor attracts tourists during the rainy season, Mithamain Haor is now a hot favorite place for tourists because of the recently launched All-Weather Road. Itna and  Ajmiriganj upazilas bound it on the north, Austagram upazila on the south,  Baniachang and Austagram upazilas on the east, Karimganj and Nikli  upazilas on the west. The haor has remained filled with water for five to six months. After the water goes down, the whole haor is filled with green feathers. Although the beauty of the haor remains intact throughout the year, the rainy season is the main attraction for travelers.

How to go to Mithamain?

Ananya Paribahan buses from Mohakhali in Dhaka and Ananya Super bus from Sayedabad can reach the Kishoreganj bus stand in three and a half to four hours. Then you can go to Station Road from the bus stand using an easy bike. From there, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Tk 40 Chamra Bondor. This Chamra bondor (port) can be called one of the hubs of Kishoreganj’s Bhati region. Vessels from Itna, Mithamain, and Khaliajuri of Netrokona leave from this port. After one hour from Chamra Ghat, the trawler leaves for Mithamain till 5:00pm.

Besides, if you want to go to Itna from Chamra bondor and rent a boat in the afternoon and visit Mithamain. If you want to go to the train, you have to catch the Egarosindur Prabhati or Kishoreganj Express.

Nikli Haor is an ideal place for a one-day tour by wandering around in the boat in the chest of transparent water, visiting villages like islands awakened in the water, small water forests like Ratargul, and having fresh fish of Haor. If you get on the train from Kamalapur at 7:15 am, you will reach  Kishoreganj at 11:00 am. It will take one hour to go to Nikli Haor if you use a CNG-run auto-rickshaw. Where the auto-CNG will drop, you will find some hotels of fair quality next to it of fair quality.

After lunch with fresh fish of Haor, you will get on the boat from the ghat. Turn around the haor and return to the ghat in the evening. After reaching Kishoreganj from Nikli, you will be able to return to Dhaka on the night bus.

The best time to visit Nikli is the rainy season.  Water will not be available in Nikli Haor without monsoon. However, from the end of June to September, good water will be available in the rainy season. So this time is considered the best time to visit Nikli.

Even in winter, if any wants to go there, they must take the help of waterways.  Austagram upazila is located about 60 km to the southeast of Kishoreganj district town. A large wetland surrounded by water is Ashgram Haor, where there are several villages like islands. This haor is spread over Itna, Mithamain and Austagram, Nikli, Tarail and parts of Karimganj, Khaliajuri of Netrokona, Ajmiriganj of Habiganj and some areas of Sunamganj. In the rainy season, vast areas are submerged in water and show an ocean.  

During the rainy season, you can go from one haor to another without any hindrance. There is plenty of milk available in Austragram. The cheese here is also famous.

How to go to Austagram haor?

The best way is to take the train. Every morning at 8:10 am, Egarosindur  Prabhati (closed on Wednesday) leaves for Kishoreganj. You will have to get down to Kuliarchar. Besides, you can go to Kuliarchar by BRTC bus from Gulistan Fulbaria. The tourists also can go Kuliarchar by CNG-run auto-rickshaw via Bhairab. BRTC AC buses will be available all day.

You can go to Kishoreganj using a bus from Gulistan, Kishoreganj Travels, Ananya, Digital Ananya, Egarsindur, and Haor Bilas from Mohakhali and  Isha Khan bus from Sayedabad. By using the BRTC bus, you can go to Kishoreganj from Kamalapur’s Golapbagh. Besides, the Egarosindur Express train from Dhaka Kamalapur Railway Station at 7:30am every day can reach Kishoreganj. Then, you will be able to reach Sholakia Eidgah though rickshaw only Tk 15/20.

Jangalbari Fort was the second capital of Bara-Bhuiyans chief Isha Khan. This fort is located on the bank of Narsunda River in Jangalbari village of Karimganj upazila, just seven kilometers away from Kishoreganj.  According to the locals, the house of Mahabir Isha Khan was declared as a protected antiquity by the Department of Archeology in 2009, and later in  2013, the signboard of antiquities was hung in front of the house. In the meantime, the Department of Archeology of Bangladesh has preserved the antiquities inside the fort.

7. Sheikh Sadi Jame Masjid

Sheikh Sadi Jami Mosque is an ancient mosque located in Egarosindhur village in Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj and one of the archaeological sites of Bangladesh. There is a French inscription attached to the Sheikh Saadi Jami Mosque. The mosque was built during the rule of Shah Jahan, one of the Mughal emperors. One Shaykh Saadi built the mosque in 1651. It is also known from the inscription that Saadi’s father’s name was Shaykh  Shiru. The mosque is a little way from Sheikh Sadi Jame Mosque. According to local sources, Shah Mahmud and Sheikh Saadi were brothers, and both were businesspersons.

Sheikh Mahmud Shah Mosque is an ancient mosque located in Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj. According to sources, the mosque was built in 1680, according to Mughal architecture, whose builder was the merchant Sheikh Mahmud. Original name of this mosque is Shah Mahmud Mosque, but UNESCO published it as “Shah Mohammad Mosque” in the catalogue of Muslim architecture. This mosque is located in the village of Egarsindur on the Mathkhola-Mirzapur-Pakundia road, about 11  kilometers away from Pakundia upazila headquarters of Kishoreganj district.

9. Qutub Shah Jame Mosque

Kutub Shah Mosque is an archaeological site located in Austagram upazila of Kishoreganj district and an ancient mosque in Bangladesh. The mosque was built during the Sultanate period. At the time of the discovery of the Qutub mosque, no inscription was found in it, so there is not much known about its exact construction. However, considering the architectural style and other aspects, archaeologists believe that it was built during the Sultanate period in the 16th century. There is a grave beside the mosque which is believed to be of Qutb Shah. According to his name, the mosque is called the Qutub Mosque or Qutub Shah Mosque.
