By TOI Desk Report August 21, 2022 Update on : August 21, 2022
The scorching heat of the summer may cause discomfort for you. Many of us get tired very quickly during the summer season due to the hot weather and sweating. Excessive heat can cause serious damage to the human body and mental health. On a hot sunny day, the most common problems are heatstroke, dehydration, diarrhea, sunburn, heat rash, headache, dizziness, migraine, and so on. You need to be prepared to save yourself from the sun and heat during the summer. Here are some easy tips to keep you protected from the sun and high temperatures. Let’s have a look…
Use an umbrella:
You can carry an umbrella with you when you are going out on a hot sunny day. Carrying a lightweight umbrella would not be a big deal for you, but it would give you relief from the scorching heat. If you don’t want to get sunburnt, use an umbrella. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can be a cause of skin cancer. So, protect your skin from sunlight to avoid the health risk.
Use sunscreen:
You should apply sunscreen to your skin for at least 30 minutes before going out of your home or office. If your shift in the sun is for a long time, you can apply sunscreen every two to three hours. You can apply the sunscreen gently on your face, hands, and other parts of your body exposed to the sun. You need to be alert when you are using sunscreen around your eyes.
Drink enough water or fluid:
Drinking enough pure water is a must for everyone to maintain a healthy body. According to the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, a man should drink 3.7 liters of fluid per day and the amount of fluid for a woman is 2.7 liters per day. The amount of water or fluid can go up if you are sweating more and working on a hot summer day. You can try lemonade or saline if you find water very boring and tasteless. However, having too much water or fluid in a short time can cause your salt level to drop and your cells to swell.
Wear a loose-fitting and light-colored cotton dress:
You should wear loose-fitting and light-colored dresses during the summer season. The loose clothing has enough space to flow in the air. On the other hand, light-colored cotton dresses reflect the sunlight and keep you less warm on a sunny day. Black or any other dark-colored dress absorbs the sunlight more. Your comfort should get more priority than style in the summer. Moreover, you can use sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sunlight. You should avoid silk or synthetic clothing and wear cotton in the summer.
Reschedule your timing:
You can reschedule your time if the sun is brighter and the temperature is very high. You can postpone your less important tasks to keep yourself protected from excessive heat. Your shopping or roaming can be done in the afternoon or evening instead of noon during a heat wave. You can work more and lose less energy while working on a calm evening when the sun fades out. Stay indoors or in a shady place as much as you can.
Eat healthy food:
Eat healthy foods to stay fit. Avoid oily and junk foods. Eat fruits and fresh homemade foods to keep your cholesterol level and blood pressure low. You will feel upset after eating oily foods. Juicy fruits will help give you energy and keep you hydrated in the summer. Avoid too much tea and coffee. Eat light meals instead of heavy meals.
Take a shower or freshen up:
You must take a shower at least once or twice a day to get rid of excessive heat in hot weather. You can wash your face with cool water if needed. After taking a shower or freshening up, you will feel clean and refreshed. You will get a fresh feeling and have more energy after taking a shower.
Besides the mentioned advice, there are some other ways to stay protected from excessive heat and the sun. You must adopt new things into your lifestyle to cope with the hot weather in summer.
