Russell was born in Henderson of Nevada on September 8, 1982. He was given the surname Chumlee when he was 12 years old boy.  His father equated him one day to the walrus Chumley in the animated cartoon Tennessee Tuxedo due to his large face and chin.

Chumlee has a sister named Terra and a brother named Sage. One of his boyhood best friends was Corey Harrison and he is a son of Rick Harrison and grandson of Richard Harrison.
