Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds this week said he was “surprised” Disney allowed R-rating for Deadpool & Wolverine.
The movie which is scheduled for release on July 26 would be Marvel’s first R-rated film, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Reynolds said he didn’t want to sound condescending but he was really proud of them for taking the step during an interview with Fandango.
He said it was a huge leap for them which added a whole new color to the kaleidoscopic wheel to the company and the people they have been entertaining since forever.
Reynolds also added that the R-rating was not simply about exploiting the ability to just do R-rated stuff, but because there was no other way to do it for this character.
Deadpool & Wolverine would also feature a crossover with Hugh Jackman’s Logan, the X-men character from the eponymous movie in 2017, which was also R-rated.
Reynolds said the rating was necessary for the film to maintain the “full-throated” version of both Wolverine and Logan.
Director Shawn Levy, who was also present at the interview, echoed Ryan Reynolds.
He said they were clear from the get-go. If the three of them were doing this, they would be real and true to the character of Deadpool that has been portrayed in both the comic books and movies.
Which meant that they were not softening the edges and going rough to remain audacious, funny, and edgy.
