Andre Braugher, an actor best known for playing stoic police officers on the television shows “Homicide: Life on the Street,” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, has passed away. He was 61.

His longtime publicist Jennifer Allen confirmed the death on Tuesday saying that Mr Braugher, Emmy Award-winning actor, had died in New Jersey on Monday after a brief illness, reports The New York Times.

However, Jennifer Allen did not elaborate.

Braugher is survived by his wife Ami Brabson, sons– Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley– his brother Charles Jennings, and his mother to mourn him.

Born on July 1, 1962, Andre Keith Braugher grew up on Chicago’s West Side. Sally Braugher, mother of Braugher, worked for the US Postal Service while Floyd Braugher, father of Andre, was a heavy-equipment operator for the state of Illinois.

He went to St. Ignatius College Prep and Jesuit Catholic High School in Chicago, before winning a scholarship to Stanford University.

When he gravitated to acting, his father, who wanted his son to be an engineer, was furious.

Braugher earned a Masters of Fine Arts from the Juilliard School after graduating from Stanford with a major in math.

“Glory,” an Oscar-winning 1989 film, was one of his first professional acting roles. The film was about Black soldiers fighting for the Union during the US Civil War.

Even though Mr Braugher often worked in California, he insisted on living in New Jersey. He would go on to star in many other films, such as “Get on the Bus” (1996), and “City of Angels” (1998), about an angel (Nicolas Cage) who falls in love with a doctor (Meg Ryan).

“She Said” (2022) was one of Mr. Braugher’s last film projects. It was a drama about New York Times reporters’ efforts to document sexual abuse.  Mr Braugher portrayed Dean Baquet as the newspaper’s executive editor at the time.

In addition, he played Shakespearean roles at the New York Shakespeare Festival and other venues.

According to the entertainment site Deadline Report, his most recent project, “The Residence,” had been scheduled to resume shooting in January.

As an actor, Braugher was famous for the television series– “Gideon’s Crossing” (2000-2001) and “Men of a Certain Age” (2009-2011).

In addition, he starred in the sixth and last season of the Paramount+ legal drama “The Good Fight” (2017-2022).
