Renowned CNN anchor Aaron Brown, who died on Sunday at the age of 76, gained prominence for his coverage of the 2001 September 11 attacks and his role in shaping the network’s evening news format.

The living reporting– on attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11 –from the top of the CNN building in Manhattan went on to earn him the Edward R. Murrow Award.

Brown was an ABC news anchor before joining CNN where he became known for his perceptive reporting but his journalism career started in local Seattle television.

Brown anchored “NewsNight” from 2001 to 2005. The program combined breaking news with in-depth analysis. He earned acclaim for his ability to handle complex stories with sensitivity and insight.

Calling Brown “a great writer and broadcaster,” CNN’s Anderson Cooper said Brown had a truly unique talent and a beautiful way with words such as Thoughtful, funny, and diligent.

According to CNN’s John Vause, his coverage of 9/11 attacks established him as a trusted figure during one of the darkest moments in US history.

Vause said when the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed, his calm demeanour and humanizing approach struck a chord with viewers, Brown began his broadcast earlier than scheduled on 9/11 in 2001.

When Brown was hired as the founding anchor for World News Now of ABC, his foray into national broadcasting started in New York City.

Brown worked as a reporter for “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings,” as well as “Nightline” throughout his time with ABC News.

He also served as an anchor for Good Morning America Sunday and World News Tonight Saturday.

He went on to work for CNN in June of 2001 after his time at ABC. His first day on air for CNN was on September 11.
