Mekhi Becton, an American professional football guard for the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League, has officially signed with the Chargers after a brief period as a free agent.
He is possibly the most important signing of free agency for the Los Angeles Chargers.
LA’s interior offensive line was the most significant weakness last season of the team while Los Angeles Chargers struggled to build an effective rushing attack.
The New York Jets in the first round drafted Becton, who enjoyed the last season as a career renaissance, in 2020 as a tackle. In the last season, the Jets switched him to guard with arch-rival Philadelphia Eagles and emerged as an impactful run blocker.
However, Mekhi Becton completed 24th in run block win rate amongst guards ahead of Johnson and Pipkins.
A source told ESPN that Mekhi played right guard in Philadelphia and plans to continue to play guard. The Chargers will release Pipkins, which would save them $6.75 million, through this move.
Following four years in New York marked by injuries, Becton signed a $2.75 million contract for one year with the Eagles last offseason.
Becton, 25, who started 30 games at tackle with the Jets, missed all but one game in 2021 and 2022 seasons due to his knee injuries.
