Johnny Depp testified in court as a witness in his court battle against his ex-wife Amber Heard, whom he alleges of lying about his assault throughout their brief marriage.
Depp testified for three hours in a Virginia courtroom on Tuesday that he and Amber Heard argued but that he never hit her. He wanted to be clear straight regarding his actions for himself and his children’s sake.
He also reported about his connection with Amber Heard in its early stages, his drug usage, and his childhood. Heard submitted an op-ed in The Washington Post in December 2018 expressing her endorsement for the Violence against Women Act.
She based it from her own experiences as a victim of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Depp, 58, claims Heard, 35, slandered him in a December 2018 Washington Post opinion post about becoming a survivor of domestic abuse. In 2018, he submitted a $50 million complaint against Heard.
The piece never referenced Depp by name, but Depp’s lawyer, Benjamin Chew, told prosecutors one week ago that it was obvious Heard was referring to the Hollywood star.
Attorneys representing Heard have contended that she expressed the facts and that her viewpoint was protected as freedom of speech under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Read more about Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck Are Once Again Engaged.
In their opening statements, Heard’s prosecutors said that Depp abused her physically and sexually while consuming narcotics and alcohol. The trial is in its second week and is anticipated to run six weeks, and is being conduct over by a state court judge in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Depp lost a libel suit against The Sun, a British tabloid that called him a “wife abuser,” less than two years ago. A judge in London’s High Court concluded that he had frequently abused Heard and placed her in dread of her life.
According to Depp’s lawyers, the complaint was brought in Fairfax County, Virginia, outside of the District of Columbia, since the Washington Post is printed at a facility there.
The U.s is a challenging environment for libel claimants, particularly prominent persons like Depp, who must establish Heard willfully made false accusations through clear and persuasive evidence.
