New Year’s terror attack: Who was Shamsud-Din Jabbar?

A suspected terror attack by ploughing a truck through a crowd on Bourbon Street in the US’s New Orleans in the early morning of New Year killed at least 10 people and injured dozens more.
Police have identified the suspect as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, but he was killed after a shootout with police soon after the attack, the FBI said.
What do we know about Shamsud-Din Jabbar?
Born and raised in Texas, Jabbar was an American citizen and formerly served in the US Army, per The US Sun, according to the preliminary identification reports.
Law enforcement sources accused him of killing 10 people and injuring 35 as his truck collided with a lift vehicle at the intersection of Bourbon and Conti streets.
The injured are being treated at local hospitals with some reported in critical condition.
As Jabbar intentionally struck pedestrians, he reportedly drove around a police barricade at Canal Street.
Jabbar got out of the truck and started shooting at law enforcement on the scene after he hit a lift vehicle, the FBI said. However, he was killed by return fire.
Two policemen suffered wounded in the shootout and were taken to University Medical Center.
New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said the injured were stable.
Quoting witnesses, the media reported that Jabbar was walking out of the truck. He wore full body armour. He is also believed to have owned an assault rifle. Jabbar is also carrying a black ISIS flag.
