The early life of Nichelle Nichols

Nichelle Nichols took birth in the suburb area of Robbins, Illinois near Chicago on December 28, 1932. She has grown up with her mother Lishia Mae (Parks) Nichols, father Samuel Earl Nichols, and her younger brother Thomas. Her father Samuel Earl worked in a factory and was elected as mayor in 1929 and served as chief magistrate of Robbins. Her mother Lishia Mae was a homemaker. 

Unfortunately, Nichelle, who is among the third of six children of her parents, lost her brother Thomas Nichols, a member of the Heaven’s Gate cult, in March 1997 at that time, when the members committed mass suicide. Career

Nichols starred in the Oscar Brown musical Kicks and Co. and captured the attention of “Playboy” publisher Hugh Hefner, who employed her to show up at the Chicago Playboy Club in 1961.

She also performed the title role in a Chicago production of Carmen Jones and emerged in a production of Porgy and Bess in New York.

Her first film appearance was an unacknowledged role as a dancer in the 1959 film adjustment of Porgy and Bess which dotted Sidney Poitier and Dorothy Dandridge.

Nichelle was in a romantic and loving relationship with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry in the 1960s, and she stated that they would split the relationship before the series began. Roddenberry died in 1991 and Nichols sang a song she had co-written during his funeral.

Later in 1951, Nichelle married dancer Foster Johnson but they divorced each other in 1952. The two appreciated their son Kyle on August 14, 1951. Nichols then got married to Duke Mondy in 1968, and they cut up the marital relationship in 1972.
