Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a woman who was sent to prison for persuading her boyfriend to kill her abusive mother in Missouri, was released on Thursday from prison on parole, reported BBC and ABC News.

Blanchard, now 32, was sentenced to jail for 10 years in 2015 after she pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of her mother Dee Dee Blanchard who had forced her to pretend for years that she was suffering from leukaemia, muscular dystrophy, and other serious illnesses.

The woman plotted and persuaded an online boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to kill her mother following years of abuse.

However, Godejohn is now serving a life sentence without parole.

The case sparked intense media interest and was even made into a streaming series on Hulu in 2019.

Gypsy Blanchard was released from the Chillicothe Correctional Center at 3:30 am (local time) having served seven years of a 10-year sentence, said Karen Pojmann, a spokesperson for the Missouri Department of Corrections.

Detailing her mother’s abusive behaviour, Gypsy Blanchard told media interviews in 2017 that her mother kept her weak, isolated and dependent on her.

While testifying, Gypsy said, “My mother beat her and chained me to a bed.” She had essentially kept her daughter prisoner, forcing her to use a wheelchair and feeding tube.

Gypsy slowly began to understand that she wasn’t as sick as her mom told her.

While talking to ABC News “20/20” in an interview, Gypsy said she eventually grew more curious about the outside world, made a dating profile, and began a relationship with Godejohn.

Gypsy also said that as she was giving too much attention to him [ boyfriend], my mother became resentful. Mother had ordered me to stay away from him.”

“I wanted her my mother dead as I wanted to escape her,” Gypsy Blanchard told “20/20”.

Godejohn told police he stabbed “Dee Dee” Blanchard in her bedroom in June 2015 as he wanted to protect Gypsy [his girlfriend].

Gypsy Blanchard and Nicholas Godejohn were then arrested hundreds of miles away in Wisconsin where Godejohn lived.
