R. Kelly Sentenced to 30 Years in New York Sex Trafficking Conviction

R&B singer R. Kelly was condemned to 30 years in prison on Wednesday, following his conviction last year on federal extortion and sex trafficking charges arising from his years-long efforts to exploit victims he sexually assaulted.

Kelly was found guilty on all nine charges of sex trafficking and racketeering by a jury in New York City in September.

On Wednesday, United District Judge Ann Donnelly issued the sentence in federal court in Brooklyn after hearing testimony from survivors about how Kelly’s exploitation affected their lives.

Kelly, despite her conviction, denies any role in sex trafficking. Bonjean stated their intention to appeal the judgement during a news conference following the punishment.

Kelly’s imprisonment comes years after the first claims of sexual assault were revealed. Among his accusers was his ex-wife, Andrea Kelly, who said Kelly threatened to murder her.

In June 2002, he was accused with 21 charges of creating child sexual abuse recordings featuring various sexual actions, but he was acquitted on all counts after a trial in 2008.

Then, in January 2019, a six-part documentary named Surviving R Kelly aired on the US TV network Lifetime, outlining claims of sexual abuse and misconduct against the musician. Accusers in the film wondered whether their allegations had previously been dismissed because they were Black women.
