Renowned actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who died on Friday at 87 after a prolonged illness, was popularly known as Bharat Kumar.
Kumar, who left a significant impact on Indian cinema, was also fondly known for his patriotic films like Shaheed, Upkar, and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan.
The actor breathed his last at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital around 3:30am due to age-related health issues after battling a long illness.
Kumar, celebrated for his patriotic films, was admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, after his health deteriorated.
According to medical reports, the death of the legendary actor was caused by cardiogenic shock resulting from an acute myocardial infarction after a severe heart attack.
The actor had been struggling with liver cirrhosis in recent months, the reports added.
The celebrated actor, filmmaker and lyricist was known for patriotic films that aided define ideas of Indian nationhood.
Kumar was the face of several iconic songs woven into national memory, working in the golden age of Hindi film music.
The actor was hospitalized for the past few weeks.
Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, also expressed his condolences and deeply saddened by the passing of filmmaker Manoj Kumar.
Born in 1937, Manoj was an icon of Indian cinema who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal.
Expressing that the industry will greatly miss him, fellow filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news.
The famous actor was honoured the Padma Shri in 1992 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015 by the Indian government for his contribution to Indian cinema and arts.
He was also the recipient of a National Film Award and seven Filmfare Awards, in varied categories.
