The authorities issued an order to evacuate all employees at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital in San Bernardino County in Southern California on Wednesday night following reports of a possible gunman in the emergency department.
According to the website, the hospital has 364 beds and serves about 90,000 patients a year housed within Loma Linda University Medical Center.
However, law enforcement later determined the incident as an apparent swatting call, and no injuries were reported.
Hospital spokesperson Briana Pastorino said they confirmed after an investigation that normal business operations have resumed on campus and there is no active threat.
Any necessary investigation will be conducted by law enforcement on campus, the spokesperson added.
The authorities considered the matter as a swatting incident as offenders under pretenses initiated an emergency law enforcement response against a victim.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department issued an initial statement around 6:40pm in this regard.
According to the statement, the reports of possible armed individuals forced deputies to be present at the scene and actively clear the facility.
Meanwhile, the authorities have advised people to avoid the area due to heavy law enforcement presence and to use alternative routes around the hospital at 11234 Anderson St. in Loma Linda.
According to social media posts and television footage, law enforcement vehicles were seen blocking traffic on surrounding streets.
Helicopter video showed people being escorted out of the hospital around 7:30pm.
According to reporting from ABC7, students on campus and medical buildings nearby have received a text message alert, saying, “if confronted with a threat, RUN, HIDE, FIGHT, this is not a drill: Initiate immediate protective actions.”
