What happened to Liam Payne?

Former member of One Direction singer Liam Payne was found dead outside a hotel in Buenos Aires after taking a fall from his third-floor room balcony, confirmed Argentine police on Wednesday.

In a statement, police said they found that a man had fallen over the balcony in his room while responding to a call to the hotel in the capital’s leafy Palermo neighborhood after the hotel manager said he heard a loud noise at the back of the hotel.

Emergency healthcare professionals confirmed the news of the death of the 31-year-old British singer, who was apparently found in the hotel’s interior patio.

MTV in a post on X said it was “saddened to learn of Liam Payne’s tragic passing today”.

Neither Liam Payne’s record label Republic Records, nor its owner Universal Music Group UMG.AS could immediately be reached by Reuters for comments.

Payne rose to stardom as part of the since-disbanded pop band One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson.

The boy band got its kickstart after coming third on the British rendition of X Factor in 2010. However, the band parted ways in 2016 as its members went solo.

Entertainment Weekly in 2024 ranked One Direction as the third greatest boy band of all time.

As per Celebrity Net Worth, Liam’s One Direction and solo career made him a net worth of around $70 million.

Reuters correspondents at the scene reported seeing crowds gathering outside the hotel, where dozens of police and emergency services teams cordoned off an area.

Liam Payne and singer and British TV personality Cheryl Cole had a son named Bear Grey Payne in 2017.

Liam earlier in the month had attended a concert of Niall Horan in Buenos Aires.

The musician has been vocal in the media about his struggle with addiction and even spending time at rehab.
