Coastal Flooding means when water inundates or floods generally dry coastal land due to high or rising tides or storm surges.

In the National Risk Index, a Coastal Flooding Risk Index score and rating represents the relative risk for a community for Coastal Flooding as compared to the rest of the United States.

A coastal flood advisory has been issued for the five boroughs of New York by the National Weather Service, however, the reason was not attributed to rain.

Thursday’s supermoon brought changes to the tide cycle and, in turn, higher tides to the shore, a National Weather Service spokesperson told PIX11 News.

The gravitational pull is greater during the full and new moons, which creates higher sea levels.

Since Thursday’s full moon is a supermoon, the gravitational pull is even stronger, hence sea levels along the coast will be higher and could lead to inundation during high tide cycles.

Thursday’s supermoon was about 222,056 miles from the Earth, making it the closest supermoon of the year.

A storm system off the Virginia coast is also leading to higher sea levels, as per PIX11 meteorologists.

NotifyNYC has issued coastal flood advisories for various parts of the five New York boroughs from 8:00pm Thursday through 2:00am Friday.

The agency issued warnings of possible flooding on low-lying roads and houses close to the shore.
