Pro Football Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion Larry Allen, one of the most dominant NFL offensive linemen, has died, according to the Dallas Cowboys. He was 52.
Allen died on Sunday while vacationing with his family in Mexico, the football team said.
A seven-time All-Pro inducted into the Pro Football of Hall of Fame in 2013, Allen was a man of few words and let his blocking do the talking.
The Cowboys said Monday that Larry was one of the most respected, accomplished offensive linemen to ever play in the NFL.
He was known for his great athleticism and incredible strength and his versatility and dependability were also signature parts of his career.
According to the Cowboys, Allen was one of the strongest players to ever play in the NFL, bench pressing 700 pounds and squatting 900 pounds.
Allen was so feared among his peers that notorious trash-talker John Randle of the Minnesota Vikings decided to keep to himself when he faced the Dallas Cowboys, just to avoid driving Allen mad.
Pro Football Hall of Fame President Jim Porter said the National Football League is filled with gifted athletes, but only a rare few have combined the size, brute strength, speed, and agility of Larry Allen,”
Allen was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys as the 46th player overall in the 1994 NFL draft, with whom he played for most of his 12-year career.
Towards the end of his career, Allen played two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers from 2006 to 2007.
In 2019, celebrating the first 100 years of the league, Allen was selected to the NFL’s 100 greatest players team.
His rise to NFL fame was remarkable as he came from small schools. He started out his college career at Butte Junior College in Oroville, California, and later transferred to Division II school Sonoma State, near San Francisco.
Allen played in a total of 203 career games and was the starting right guard for Dallas Cowboys when they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 in the Super Bowl XXX.
