Phil Lesh’s wife, Jill, managed his finances throughout his career and supported his busy concert schedule.
The two met in Berkeley, California, at Station Cafe, where Jill was working.
However, the two have never shared specific details about their meeting publicly.
Phil and Jill Lesh have two children — Grahame Lesh and Brian Lesh.
Grahame is a musician known for the band Midnight North. He also performs regularly with other bands, such as his father’s Phil Lesh and Friends and The Terrapin Family Band.
Brian is also a musician and has performed several times with Phil Lesh, Friends, and other US-based bands.
Phil Lesh, the influential bassist for the Grateful Dead, has powered many of the jam band’s touring incarnations since the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995.
Lesh’s Instagram page announced his demise on Friday. He was 84.
Born in Berkeley, California on 15 March 1940, Lesh was a student of classical music during his childhood.
Lesh trained to play the trumpet and went on to study with avant-garde composer Luciano Berio. He played with the minimalist composer Steve Reich.
He switched to playing bass – an instrument he never played – in 1965 after he was recruited by the Warlocks, a band his friend Garcia fronted, for a show at a pizza joint in Menlo Park, California.
Lesh’s footprint was crucial in the early music of the Grateful Dead, which was often credited alongside Garcia.
He wrote a number of compositions along with other members, including St Stephen, The Eleven and Dark Star, which eventually became staples of the jam band’s collection.
Alongside other members of the Grateful Dead, Lesh was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
