It was Mark Withers who played the character of the gay lover of Steven Carrington, portrayed by Al Corley, Ted Dinard in the premiere season of the 1981 soap opera Dynasty.

The show ended abruptly after nine seasons in 1989 after ABC killed it due to dwindling ratings.

Mark Withers however has been fortunate in his career on the small screen.

He is known for multiple high-profile roles besides the iconic role of Ted Dinard on Dynasty

However, things started to look good for Withers in 2016 when he bagged the role of the character of Gary the coroner in the first season of Stranger Things on Netflix.

It was rare for an actor to play a gay character in a major US TV series in the 1980s.

Withers told a podcast called Hollywood and Beyond in 2018 that the creators of Dynasty were ahead of their time in showcasing a realistic homosexual relationship on screen without scandal or humour.

In recent years, he has also been a cast member of “Sense8,” “Criminal Minds,” “Castle,” “Frasier,”  and “Drop Dead Diva.”

On November 22, Mark died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 77.
