The name of the Atlanta Braves, an American professional baseball team based in the Atlanta metropolitan area, originates from the team’s early history in Boston.

The team has undergone several name changes after the club was founded in Massachusetts in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings.

Reflecting the imagery of a strong and courageous fighter, the term “Braves” has been chosen to honor the Native American warriors.

The club adopted the Boston Red Stockings (1871–1875) while Boston Red Caps (1876–1882), Boston Beaneaters (1883–1906), Boston Doves (1907–1910), Boston Rustlers (1911), Boston Braves (1912–1935), Boston Bees (1936–1940), Boston Braves (1941–1952), Milwaukee Braves (1953–1965) and finally Atlanta Braves (1966–present).

The team is famous for its several nicknames. They are The Bravos, The Team of the 90s and America’s Team.

The Braves did not find much success in Atlanta until 1991, but the franchise was one of the most successful teams in baseball from 1991 to 2005.

By this time, the club has won an unprecedented 14 consecutive division titles. This win made an MLB record with eight consecutive National League Championship Series appearances and produced one of the greatest pitching rotations in the history of baseball. Hall of Famers Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, and Tom Glavine are some of them.

The franchise has earned an MLB record 23 divisional titles, 18 National League pennants, and four World Series championships.

The club is the only franchise to have won the World Series in three different home cities.

The Braves have an overall win–loss record of 4,850–4,461–8 through the end of 2024 since moving to Atlanta in 1966.
