Justin Trudeau, Canadian prime minister for nine years and leader of the Liberal Party for 11, has decided to resign as the country’s prime minister due to several factors, including growing pressure from his own party.

Trudeau was also facing a mounting set of crises from Donald Trump’s tariff threats to the resignation of key allies and disastrous opinion polls.

Besides, the Canadian prime minister cited ‘internal battles’ as he ended his nine-year run.

He also mentioned that a new leader is chosen as parliament will be suspended until March 24.

His personal unpopularity with Canadians also drags on his party’s fortunes in upcoming federal elections later this year.

This week, the process to select a new leader will begin through a meeting of the party’s board of directors, said Liberal Party President Sachit Mehra.

What happens next for Canada?

Although Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as Canada’s prime minister and as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada after weeks of mounting pressure to step down, he will take responsibility until a new Liberal leader is fixed. Many questions remain for the party how they will manage a looming federal election?

What is a prorogued Parliament?

According to Trudeau, the governor-general accepted Trudeau’s request to prorogue Parliament. The suspension will stop debates, votes and all other proceedings without dissolving parliament.

Trudeau earlier prorogued parliament in August 2020 as his government was facing an ethics scandal over its handling of a contract with a charity.
