The original vocalist of Iron Maiden Paul Di’Anno left the band in 1981 and was replaced later by Bruce Dickinson.
Di’Anno later admitted in an interview that he had been partying non-stop, 24 hours a day.
He said the impact of his lifestyle was not fair to the band, the fans or himself.
The band’s present members paid tribute to Di’Anno, stating that his demise deeply saddened them, reports BBC.
Paul Di’Anno, the former lead singer for heavy metal band Iron Maiden, died on October 21. He was 66.
Born on May 17, 1958, in Chingford, East London, she grew up in the British capital. His Brazilian father gave him both British and Brazilian citizenship.
The musician spent his teenage life performing with various rock bands. He also worked as a butcher in Station Road and later as a chef in hotels and restaurants.
The musician was on the band’s eponymous first album and the second, “Killers”. The albums established Iron Maiden as an integral part of the new wave of British heavy metal.
In a social media statement, one of Maiden’s founder and bassist Steve Harris said it was just so sad he was gone.
Without providing further details, they said in a statement that the English heavy metal singer died at his home in Salisbury.
Paul befriended Steve Harris in 1977, who was looking for a vocalist for his up-and-coming metal band Iron Maiden. Di’Anno auditioned and got the part.
Their music was an anomaly during the rise of punk rock in Britain at the time and the band struggled to get gigs outside London. The band then decided to produce a demo tape to drum up business.
By selling 5,000 copies by mail, the three-track demo called The Soundhouse Tapes garnered Maiden a cult following.
Two years later in 1979, Maiden secured a record deal with EMI and started recording their first eponymous album.
Di’Anno later on said that he never held any grudge against the band, or his replacement.
After quitting Iron Maiden, Paul’s raw and aggressive vocals were credited as an influence by metal bands including the likes of Metallica, Pantera, and Sepultura.
He remained in the music industry as a solo artist and a member of bands such as Killers, Battlezone, Gogmagog, and Praying Mantis.
Recently, Di’Anno had been performing in a wheelchair due to his critical health conditions, including lymphedema, a condition which causes swelling of the body tissue.
His fans helped him raise money for a major knee surgery in Croatia in 2022.
Despite his deteriorating health, Paul Di’Anno maintained a busy touring schedule, playing more than 100 shows over the last two years.
