Why did Trump order to exit WHO again?

President Donald Trump has ordered the United States to exit the World Health Organization for a second time following a move reminiscent of the first withdrawal attempt in 2020.

Trump’s first withdrawal order mentioned that WHO continues to demand unfairly onerous payments from the US and the global health organisation helped China which allegedly misled the world about the spread of Covid-19.

This year, Trump signed an executive order Monday night withdrawing the US from the global health body.

According to the order, the US will leave the WHO within a year from the official notification to the United Nations and the WHO. Trump asked newly confirmed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to implement it.

According to the 1948 US resolution accepting WHO membership, although Congress doesn’t need to agree, the US must continue paying its dues.

Trump asked two to “pause the future transfer of any US government funds, support, or resources to the WHO” following a move reminiscent of the first withdrawal attempt in 2020.

This is Trump’s second attempt to withdraw the US from the WHO as he, in July 2020, sent a letter to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to withdraw the US from the organisation within a year.

Trump accused the WHO of helping China which allegedly misled the world about the spread of Covid-19.

However, Trump’s move did not come out successful as he was defeated by Biden in the 2020 US Presidential election. President Joe Biden took office in January 2021 and reversed Trump’s decision.

This time, Trump announced the withdrawal after he took office.
